Pilots and Field Work

Summer and Fall 2013

Spring and Summer had us busy with some great digital media and mobile projects. Most notably, we received three rounds of funding from the National Science Foundation and Mozilla for our place-based mobile learning resource, OpenPath. We presented in Chicago in the Spring, then Chattanooga--the "Gig City"--this summer. OpenPath allows anyone with a browser to create and lead learning paths through cities, parks, museums, neighborhoods.

MobileEd has been helping the DML Lab at Mount Greylock High School, leading an Educator Innovator grant award from The National Writing Project to train faculty members in Mozilla's Popcorn Webmaker tool .

We have been curating Connected Learning TV's Mobile Learning month, led by UC Irvine, MacArthur, and the DML Hub. This should be a great series. More on the line-up soon.

Fall 2011 - Winter/Spring 2012

We're currently working on Open mobile Learning Badges as finalist for the HASTAC / Mozilla / MacArthur Foundation Digital Media & Learning Competition 2012.

MobileEd.org presented “The Pragmatics of Use: A Mobile learning Reality Check” at the MacArthur / Mozilla Foundation’s International Future of Learning Conference, MobilityShifts.org. The research—which is ongoing—explores if and how students and teachers are currently using mobile devices in K-12 learning settings. The study also looks at why devices are not being used.

This Fall and Winter, we’re continuing this body of research, and also working with several local schools to develop the first mobile learning lessons that map to Common Core Standards. Our first lessons will be in the STEM subject areas and will be usable content for Open Mobile Learning.

Spring - Summer 2011

Mobile learning and related projects in the works: Museum Mobile Pilots (gallery talk with MCLA/MASS MoCA and other B-HIP interns), Mobile Research 2011 study (interviews and research with high school administrators, IT directors, teachers, and students on mobile behavior and learning), and a DML Hub / MacArthur-funded workshop / working group to explore the potential of using mobile technology in inquiry-driven environmental education (EE) in the outdoors. Participants: Bank Street College (BSC), theWildLab, the New York Hall of Science, MobileEd.org, and others.

Central to this work is the creation of Open Mobile Learning, a collaboration across both higher education research institutions and local elementary and high schools. This groundwork in mobile learning is creating a national resource for mobile learning practices.

Fall 2010

We have several new projects emerging with academic (university/college) and corporate partners.

MobileEd is also currently working with an international educational organization, creating a platform for mobile learning curricula. In addition, we’re lending a hand with projects like TheLearningRegistry. Also, we have been working closely with the folks at TheWildLab.org, using mobile technology to explore, discover, and share the natural world.

Spring 2009

MobileEd engaged in two pilot programs exploring how mobile devices complement core curriculum at secondary and college levels in the US.

Fall 2009 and Winter/Spring 2010

MobileEd ran several pilots at local public schools in Massachusetts: a charter school, an elementary school, and a secondary school. Mobiles are being used in the field for STEM topics/skills such as environmental and scientific data gathering and analysis. Students are also using mobiles for citizen reporting and podcasting, image harvesting, and narrative collaboration.
